No one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Every individual is a closed door; while we can observe a person’s exterior, we have no entry into their mind.

In recent years, the topic of mental health has become more widely discussed in open forums, but still retains a taboo-like nature. Though publications on the range of issues have certainly increased, it is still uncommon to come across a first-hand account from a sufferer. How much more so in the frum world, where there is yet greater reluctance to discuss these issues openly.

Depressed is an open and honest personal account by Yehonatan (Yoni) Palmer of what it is like to suffer from depression as a frum man. This is a raw account by the author, who honestly felt the need to share his story with a wider audience to help others suffering from depression, for them to know they are not alone. At the same time, this insider’s account will help those looking in to understand this debilitating — yet common — illness.

About The Author

Yehonatan (Yoni) Palmer grew up in Golders Green, London, moving to Ramat Bet Shemesh, Israel, in 1998. Today he lives with his wife and daughter on a moshav just outside Ramat Bet Shemesh. He grew up in a home steeped in communal involvement, with his father, z”l, serving as a gabbai and communal leader, while his mother, z”l, also played significant roles in women’s groups in the local kehillah.

Yoni works in hi-tech as a technical writer, but outside work time is involved in communal activities, himself serving as a gabbai both on the moshav where he lives and during the time he lived in RBS. He is also a volunteer firefighter and took part in the Jerusalem area fire in August 2021.

  1. Ariel Fishman

Yoni Palmer has done what has needed to be done for ages. A riveting personal account of life with dperession and in the process has pounded down the walls of stigma that surround mental illness. This book will tug at your heart strings and hopefully open up the discussions that have been subdued for too long. Thank you to Mosaica Press, and of course to Yoni and his family for this raw and real-to-life encounter with a topic that so many of us deal with only in the secrecy of our own minds and lives. Truly a display of heroic courage and a genuine desire to help others find solace in sharing their pain.
